Fundamental Right To Marry Restored For All Californians

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that section 3 of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (D.O.M.A.) is unconstitutional. According to the majority opinion by Justice Anthony Kennedy, “Although Congress has great authority to design laws to fit its own conception of sound national policy, it cannot deny the liberty protected by the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment.”  On the same day, the high court dismissed the California Proposition 8 appeal.

With great respect to those that felt otherwise on the gay marriage issue, these laws were Un-American and we’re glad to see them gone.  The attorneys at Hughes Law Group are proud to have stood on the right side of history.  We marched (that’s Melanie Hughes at a 2008 Sacramento Rally), we donated and we’re very pleased to finally take down that very faded ” ‘I DO’ Support The Freedom to Marry” sign from the window at our East Sacramento house.  Can we all agree to never again put a minority group’s civil rights up for a majority vote?
